Kelly's Story

Growing up in Texas, Drill Team is the most iconic thing in high school (very biased opinion)! When I first saw my high school’s drill team perform, I knew I NEEDED to be part of that team! I had the best experience on my own high school drill team and that passion for dance just kept growing!

I did not grow up dancing. I grew up playing with Barbie dolls and dress up! My very first dance class was at the age of 2, but I got so bored running around in circles that I begged my mom to let me quite. Fast forward to middle of 8th grade year, when I saw my Drill Team Perform, I begged my mom to put me in a Drill Team Prep Class! The spark was ignited.

I was lucky enough to make my HS drill team, the Flower Mound High School Rosettes, under the direction of Bethany Crisp. I became obsessed with ALL things Drill Team from traditions, high kicks, saying “yes ma’am”… literally everything. During my time on Rosettes, I was a member of Kick Team, Lyrical Team, and Elite Jazz Team. I was honored to serve as a Lieutenant my senior year.

In the back of my mind I thought about becoming a Drill Team Director, but never thought I would be good enough (my Director was set the bar pretty high). I went to college thinking I would become a High School History Teacher…

Post HS, I went on to dance at Baylor University where I was part of the Songleaders (Pom Squad), under the direction of Rachel Levetzow. Dancing with this program as truly transformative. I grew as a dancer, new dreams formed, was able to choreograph many sidelines that Songleaders still do today, and SO much more. By my Senior year, I was honored to serve as a Captain. Dancing in college was such a dream come true and truly an honor!

After college, I danced professionally in the NBA as a Dallas Mavericks Dancer, under the direction of Mallory Mills. When I was on Drill Team, we hired a Mavs Dancer and I just so inspired by her. So… full circle, right? I still get emotional thinking about the first time I stepped out onto the court for our first performance. CHILLS. I loved everything about being a Dallas Mavericks Dancer!

I have been an Assistant Drill Team Director at 2 schools (Guyer Silverados & Royse City Golden Debs) and a Head Director at 1 school (Richland Royals) before fully committing to this crazy thing called High Kicks & Hair Flips. Currently, I am honored to work with so many outstanding drill teams across the state of Texas (& hopefully nationwide!) as my job. I also train dancers working towards high school, collegiate, and pro dancing.

Thanks for stopping by! Let’s dance!
